WeMed Award 2022

The Mediterranean Sustainability Award aims to promote
an inclusive transition to sustainability in the Mediterranean.

In this second edition, organised by MedWaves, the United Nations Environment Programme Mediterranean Action Plan (UNEP/MAP) regional activity centre for Sustainable Consumption and Production (SCP) and Texfor – Textile Industry Confederation, the award recognises success stories of sustainable businesses in the textile and clothing sector.

This edition is funded by the ENI CBC Med Programme.

    Hoopoo


    Hoopoo is a culture-infused brand, inspired by local and international fashion trends customized for a comfortable yet different fashion experience. One of the brand’s core value is sustainability, that includes authenticity. Collections are made from Egyptian local materials and in small to medium workshops with local workers executing the designs to achieve a slow fashion model and to guarantee a flawless pieces made with dedication and love.

  • Jocelyn Saade

    Lebanon

    Grade A+


    Grade A+ collects wool from the mountains and fields, pays shepherds, and upcycles the wool to produce blankets, roll insulation, and pellet fertilizers. Jocelyn’s mission was to find a solution to farmers' limited income and the burning of 2,500 tons of sheep wool annually in Lebanon. Jocelyne Saade's innovative approach is making a positive impact in the industry and on the environment.

    Spain and Portugal

    Sepiia


    Sepiia unites fashion and technology, creating a bridge between functionality and design to make efficient and sustainable clothes. Their shirts, blazers, polos, trousers, or dresses are designed to make your life easier: they are stain-repellent, wrinkle-free, and neutralize body odor. They make their clothes in Spain and Portugal using recycled materials and remain recyclable at the end of their lifecycle.

    Italy

    Rifò


    Rifò is a sustainable fashion brand which was born to solve two global existing problems: overproduction and overconsumption. Since its foundation, Rifò wants to combine circular economy, ethical choices and traditional production by making high quality garments and accessories with recycled and recyclable textile fibers. Their mission is to promote a change towards an ethical and sustainable economic model for the clothing industry.

NORTHERN

Individuals or legal entities that have integrated environmental and social values into a viable business model in the textile and clothing sector may apply to this category. The entity must be legally constituted in a Northern Mediterranean country (eligible areas of ENI CBC Med in Europe) and have a defined business plan with potential or actual environmental and social benefits.

    Environmental and Circular Economy Specialist


    Maya Karkour is an Environmental and Circular Economy Specialist, an Eco-Entrepreneur, and the Managing Director of EcoConsulting, a specialized sustainability consultancy which she founded in 2003 in the UK and in 2007 in Lebanon.
    Maya has directly worked on numerous projects aiming at reducing their environmental footprint. She has been a keynote speaker or moderator at various sustainability/environmental conferences in Lebanon and other countries; and has organized and conducted numerous sustainability, green building, circular economy, and environmental seminars & workshops. She has been coaching environmental start-ups with innovative entrepreneurial solutions and is mentoring eco entrepreneurs to help them establish themselves and scale up. Maya has been actively promoting the Circular Economy and sustainable practices in Lebanon, more recently by launching the Circular Hub.
    Maya holds an MSc in Environment & Sustainable Policies from LSE, she is a Circular Economy Specialist with the Circular Economy Club, and holds the Permaculture Design Certificate, first level

  • MOHAMED IBRAHIM

    International Consultant for EC Procedures, Grant Management and Expert in Entrepreneurship


    Ibrahim has more than 14 years in the field of development programmes/projects with a wide-experiences in EC procedures, grant management and project management as well as more than 9 years of experiences in the field of applied research and management of entrepreneurial clusters including social innovation and women empowerment initiatives.
    He acts as Expert in many organization i.e., Italian Agency for Development Cooperation, CIHEAM Bari institute, European Delegation, AnnaLindah Foundation, Ministry of Scientific Research, Heliopolis University for Development, The Julius Kühn-Institute, Graz University of Technology
    Ibrahim has an extensive experience in all relevant design, development and practice facets pertaining to key thematic development areas relating to social protection and development programs, sustainable development, institutionalization, decentralization, governance, change management, public awareness and gender empowerment, civil society non-governmental organizations and community mobilization, entrepreneurship, employability, small and micro enterprises management

  • ROBERTA PECCI

    Textile Enterpreneur


    Roberta Pecci is a textile Enterpreneur. Her family is in the textile business since 1884, and she is in charge of Pecci Filati and Filati Naturali , two important spinning companies in the district of Prato producing yarns for knitwear.
    She holds a degree in Electronic Engineering from Università di Firenze and a Master in Business Administration from Bocconi University in Milan. She has been involved in sustainability and circular economy issues for her company and in representation of Confindustria Toscana Nord in various situations since 2014.
    Among others, she sits in the board of the fashion school Polimoda srl and of the research organization NTT (Next Technology Tecnotessile).

  • RIM ZOUAIDI

    Textile engineer and consultant trainer in the textile sector


    Rim Zouaidi is a textile engineer and consultant trainer in the textile sector, working at the Textile Technical Center CETTEX in Tunisia. Born in 1978, she studied in the National School of Textile Industries Mulhouse in France and holds a Master’s Degree in Process Engineering of Textile and Para-Textile Materials in the same university.
    She has worked as a consultant for the implementation of circular economy in the textile sector, as well as in the management system specializing in quality, environment and social. She is also a certified auditor in the management system.

  • DAVID ALLO

    Head of Sustainability at the Textile Industry Confederation in Spain (Texfor)


    David Allo is the Head of Sustainability at the Textile Industry Confederation in Spain (Texfor) and the Spanish Intertextile Council (CIE). He holds a wide background in the textile sector, after having analyzed more than one hundred wet process factories in different European industrial areas, working for different brands and industries in terms of strategy, development of standards, representativeness, supply chain control, etc.
    He currently participates in international working groups such as the Euratex Circular Economy Group or the United Nations Textile Industry Decarbonization Group (Ficca), as well as in the design and execution of projects in the key of sustainability, as a trainer or giving technical assistance to textile manufacturers in Spain with the aim of encouraging them in their search for international leadership.

  • ANNA IBAÑEZ

    Project Manager at MedWaves


    Ms. Anna Ibañez, B. in Law (UB-Barcelona), PGCert in Cultural Management and Policies (UOC-Barcelona), MSc in Corporate Social Responsibility (UOC-Barcelona). Project Manager at UNEP/MAP-SCP/RAC, she coordinates the ENI CBC MED funded STAND Up! project aiming at enhancing circular textiles ventures in the Mediterranean and manages the centre’s sustainable consumption-related activities. Ms. Ibañez has more than 9 years of experience in the field of sustainability. Anna specializes in supporting sustainable business development and fostering sustainable consumption the Mediterranean with a special focus on the intersection between the role of companies as drivers of circular consumption models and the change in consumer behaviour as a lever for change towards a circular economy.

The WeMed Award is hosted by MedWaves, the United Nations Environment Programme Mediterranean Action Plan (UNEP/MAP) Regional Activity Centre for Sustainable Consumption and Production (MedWaves – Catalan Waste Agency) and co-organized with Texfor. It is part of STAND Up!, an EU-funded project under the ENI CBC Med Programme.

WeMed, the Mediterranean Sustainability Award, is a flagship initiative of the UNEP/MAP Mediterranean strategy for Sustainable Development (MSSD).
